Mother as the first English Teacher
After a mother gives birth to a child, her world changes – everything changes. She inculcates all that she can to make her child a better human being. Mother is the first and the best teacher and her hands not only rock the cradle but rule the world too. The sentence aptly describes the role of a mother in our life. She is the first person to teach us the many and various aspects of life. Whatever she teaches, her child gets embodied with the teaching as her influence over her child is the strongest.
It is from the mother that the child gets its first taste of learning a language as well. As English has become one of the most widely spoken and written language everywhere, the necessity to possess a good grip over the language has increased all the more. So, it is better to start from the very beginning itself by speaking English at home. But for that, it is very important for the mother to have a good knowledge of English and a good command over communication skills (reading, writing, speaking, presentation) as well. If you are not well acquainted with the language or feel a lack the poise to speak English confidently, then it may pose as a problem while imparting the same to your child. For that, it is necessary that you know the language like the back of your hand. It is never too late to learn. Learning something new involves a lot of courage and hard work. Not because you are weak at it, or because you can't do it, but because the ability to learn something new is within us. All it requires is a little push, from our side as well as from those who play an indirect role in our learning.
Mothers who are unable to speak English naturally or read the language are looked down upon. Even for things which seem to be very easy, a person, whose English is not upto the mark may refrain from doing the task. For example, if you are a mother, who is a homemaker, the possibility is high that you may shy away from going to the parent- teacher meeting in your child’s school as you would feel it awkward and embarrassing because of your broken and poor English. You might feel that you would be judged and bring shame to yourself as well as your child. So, in order to build a positive attitude towards learning from an early age, and towards English as a language, the best place to start is with you. If you are keen on providing your kid with knowledge of English, why not join a spoken English class/ course for yourself too? That way, you will be able to go deeper into basic English speaking while imparting the necessary skills.
A major percentage of adults from the UK expressed that, they were nervous about speaking in a foreign language when on holiday. This sort of anxiety is often accompanied with negative memories of learning another language at school that can easily rub off on your little ones too. So, by learning English yourself, you can show your kids that 'having a go' and making a mistake is better than only speaking when you have the perfect sentence prepared.
We are a reflection of our first teacher (our mother) as we come into being. So, we must learn to accept the challenges from them and the grace provided by them. Apart from helping in raising kids while imparting good knowledge in English communication skills, mothers can also learn it for mental stimulation. It will use a part of your brain, that would otherwise just sleep. Learning a language requires- patience, memory, analytical skills and social skills. These are the skills which help in every aspect of one’s life. So whether you are a doting mother or a proud parent, develop your speaking skills to foster the same into your little ones and boost the right amount confidence that will make them stand out throughout their life.
